Davenport Mountain, New Mexico was a land of erupting volcanoes about 2 million yrs ago. This scene is near the top of the mountain...9ooo ft above sea level where the pines are thinner and the brush is thicker. While it's no longer barren up there you still get a strong sense of quite solitude.

Just finished re-working this painting of rabbitbrush. The colors and texture of this wild plant add something to the New Mexico landscape...especially, I think, in the mountains. They bloom in the Fall, but look pretty interesting all year long. The ones in this painting are roughly 5 ft in diameter. Painted with brush & palette knife.

The morning brought a hail storm. The layer of ice it left melted instantly with the rising sun and the steamy atmosphere created a prism for the sunlight to filter through. I took a few pictures of the event which were reference for this painting. Done with brush and palette knife.

This is a larger and more vivid version of "Forest Enchantment", a study that I did a short while ago. Here the sunlight creates interesting effects. It pours and filters into the woods, penetrating foliage and reflecting local colors. This was painted with brush & palette knife.

This scene is deep in the mountain forest. In the summer, downpours of torrential rain carve arroyos into the landscape. This one holds the only snow that hasn't begun to melt during a January thaw. I painted it using palette knife & brush.

" A Winter Dance"...just finished. Oil on canvas using brush & palette knife. It looked to me as though the oak trees on the edge of the mountain trail were dancing in celebration of winter while dressed in the remnants of autumn leaves. Behind them a steep mountain slope offered a snowy backdrop.

"When I was your age, I had to walk 10 miles to school in the snow!" Any parents or grandparents ever say that to you? Well, this is probably what the schoolhouse looked like! I actually painted this today ( 6" x 8"oil on canvas), and it's Mojave Academy....the school here in the mountains. No...you don't have to walk 10 miles to get to it as long as you live here.

What an incredible moment! A fresh snow that still leaves some remnants of Autumn. I painted this using pallet knife and brush. For those who are not familiar with horse terms, a tack shed is where one stores horse's equipment such as saddles,bridles, etc.

I'm working on a project to complete 20 to 25 paintings which will portray the area around Davenport Mountain here in the Cibola National Forest, NM. This one, "A Festival Of Light" is number three. The idea is that a whole series of paintings, done within a period of 4 or 5 weeks will develop a strong intimacy between the environment and myself. You might say that 20 to 25 pieces compose one strong communication. This one is from a photo that I took last summer, but many will be winter scenes, as it is now winter.

Canyonlands Art Show, Santa Fe, New Mexico

This is "Morning Haze" (previously posted here on Jan 5th) It will be included in the 2011 Canyonlands Show and Sale at Hueys Fine Art ( http://www.hueysfineart.com ), Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is one of the paintings that resulted from my last camping trip to the Grand Canyon. The challenge for me was to portray the rugged canyon softly ....the way it looked to me on that morning. It is 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas.

The Canyonlands show includes paintings by some of the most talented & prolific artists in the country. It opens Feb 11 through March 2011.

I'm working on doing an entire series of paintings which will portray the Cibola National Forest here in Datil, New Mexico. To that end, I've been hiking and climbing here in the mountain forest taking pictures of the remnants of our last snowfall. Here is an 8 x 10 inch painting that I just did from one of those photos. I'm calling it "A Forest Enchantment". It was done with palette knife and brush.

Just when I was finishing this painting the electric went out! Up here in the remote mountains of New Mexico that could be a real problem. BUT...they went back on again! Here's the painting I call "Enchanted Evening"...in the New Mexico high plains desert. It is 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas using brush & palette knife.

I was inspired to paint this while in Treasure Island, Florida. The Gulf Coast is as enchanting as my home in New Mexico...just a different kind of enchantment. New Mexico deserts and canyons speak of ancient landscapes bathed in a bright sunlight while the Florida beaches offer a softer, humid, and kind of sensuous glow at times.

I love to paint the Grand Canyon because it is challenging. It's challenging to stand near the edge, and it's challenging to focus on just one area of the incredibly random rock formations.
