One of the experiences that impressed me on my last camping trip to the Grand Canyon was the incredible expanse of pastel shades in the early morning. This is one of the paintings that resulted from that trip. The challenge was to portray the rugged canyon softly ....the way it looked to me on that morning.

A Tribute To Bob Dylan's "Beyond The Horizon"

I love the new songs by the "older" Bob Dylan. One of my favorites, from his album, "Modern Times" is "Beyond The Horizon". I was listening to it when I finished this painting of a sunset on Lake Abiquiu, NM...Seemed appropriate to call it by the name of that song. It's an 11 x 14 oil on canvas.

I think the greatest challenge of painting on site at the Grand Canyon is that the canyon itself appears endlessly vast and expansive, so much that it is difficult to decide which area to focus on. In this painting, rather than choosing a focal point, I used contrast of definition (sharp & defined vs muted areas) to place the viewer at a viewpoint from which to enjoy the vastness and variation of colors created by the morning atmosphere.

Here I'm back at Box Canyon in Socorro, New Mexico. This boulder seemed to be sitting in some kind of eerie suspension. I chose it as the focal point of the painting because it appears as though it is about to go into motion. I painted it from about 60 yards away.

I guess I can't stay away from this canyon. It's about an hour from my home, but worth the drive. I painted this at around 7PM, and it was still hot...eighty five degrees. The sun was beginning to set, and that made the shadows darker which created more contrast.

It was a hot day today....93 degrees in the sun. It was also pretty windy at times. However, the sunlight flooding the canyon was truly dramatic, and the sky was intensely blue. The location I painted in is called Box Canyon in Socorro County New Mexico.

Painting outdoors is both exhilarating and challenging....a kind of adventure.

The challenge here was to capture all the colors of the prairie just before sunset. The light on the landscape begins to change dramatically just as the sun begins to set, but  the sky is still mostly pale blue.A few days ago, I painted a loose, but colorful version of this which took me less than 30 minutes to complete. This one, however, took a few hours.

Although the sun was in it's earliest stages of setting, the prairie and brush were alive with cool blues and warm reds and orange.

This is what I would call pure impressionism. It is a "wash"  done in oils, and was done in about 30 minutes. Some would say that a painting done quickly is not as valuable as one that takes several steps done over a period of days, weeks, or even months. All I can say to that is that the very first "Impressionistic " painting, done by Claude Monet, was completed in minutes. Today that painting is valued in the millions of dollars. Now, I'm certainly not Monet, but then my paintings go for somewhat less than a million dollars.

The sun rose behind Davenport Mountain at 8:00 AM. By 8:45 AM, I was outside painting the light falling on a meadow that had a tent parked in it. The light became more and more intense as the morning progressed. I finished painting this at about 10:AM.

I was driving on a dirt road towards Water Canyon, New Mexico and spotted two cows walking along near the road. I stopped the car, rolled the window down, and feeling kind of flippant, said "Hi Mr. Cow!". This cow turned to look at me and his expression instantly reminded me of the old movie "Taxi Driver" when Robert DiNero delivered his now famous line..."You talkin' to me?" so I snapped a photo, and from that , created this painting.

While on a walk through old Taos, NM last summer, I spotted this partially hidden facade. I was intrigued with the building and the mountains in the backround,so I took some photos, and painted this scene yesterday.

I recently learned that it was built in 1836 by Juan De Luna, and later acquired by the Taos artist, E.I Couse who added more rooms and a studio sometime around 1866.

While the sun was in it's earliest stages of setting, I pulled off the road and

took a few pictures. It was the dramatic contrasts of the shadows and golden prairie brush that inspired me to paint this study of the scene. 

While painting it I began to appreciate the multicolored terrain, so I plan on

painting a larger version of this on canvas . Doing that will allow me to better express the colors.

I painted this in a physical therapy room of a rehabilitation center using acrylic paints, sea sponges, and watercolor brushes. This image shows a 3/4 length section of the 10 ft x 25 ft mural. 

Murals are a special kind of challenge. There is the texture of the wall, the overall size, lighting, and of course the environment that it must enhance through subject matter and color scheme.
