Night Lights

"Night Lights"
11" x 14"
oil on canavs
by
Jack Providenti

Historic downtown in St Petersburg comes to life just before & after the sun goes down. What attracted me to this particular scene were the lights and how they reflected in windows and table tops. This was "under painted" to establish values and tones, then expressed with palette knives.

Simplicity

"Simplicity"

by

8" x 10"
oil on canvas

I find sailboats inspiring. This one was painted with brushes & palette knives. The technique lends itself to creating effects of ripples in the water and a few puffy clouds against an otherwise clear blue sky.

St Pete Marina by Jack Providenti

"St Pete Marina"
by
Jack Providenti
oil on canvas
5"x7"

There is always a colorful scene to paint downtown in St Petersburg Florida. The challenge of painting this was in capturing this space.... with docks, boats, buildings & trees, and putting it all on an area of only 5 x 7 inches.

A Sunset Haze by Jack Providenti

"A Sunset Glow"

11 x 14 inches
oil on canvas

The setting sun shines east and quietly casts a slightly burning glow over the St Petersburg Marina. The soft, subtle colors inspired me to paint this scene where the compliments of orange and blue mix to create a warm, festive mood.

Sea Oats at Sunset by Jack Providenti

"Sea Oats at Sunset"
by

8 x 10 inches
oil on canvas

If you've ever witnessed the entire duration of a sun setting, you've seen the effects created by that magnificent descending ball of light. Clouds quickly form, then change colors faster than the eye can keep up with. Of the many frames captured by my camera, I chose this one to paint.

"Daybreak" by Jack Providenti

The sun breaks into the sky at the St. Petersburg Marina in Florida. I arrived before sunrise and waited for the morning light to color the sky. When it did I was ready with my camera and took several photos as reference for this painting.

"Waiting For Sunset"

"Waiting For Sunset"
plein air painting
8 x 10 inches
oil on board

The scene is downtown St Petersburg. This can almost be called a "plein-air sketch", as it was done quickly... in about 30 minutes. The light from the setting sun was changing rapidly and I wanted to capture the pre-sunset mood that first impressed me, rather than develop details of the scene.

Downtown in colorful St. Petersburg, FL on a day that the heat emptied the streets of it's people. Still, there are a few brunch customers enjoying the colorful ambiance.

I painted this mostly with brushes, and used the palette knife to add perspective to the foreground.

In Bhagawat Gita Lord Krishna said " There is a banyan tree which has its roots upward and its branches down, and the Vedic hymns are its leaves. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas."

Santa Fe , New Mexico is covered in Spanish style adobe houses set in colorful garden atmospheres. This one displayed a cool blue window & lush foliage. Painting it with a palette knife contributed to the surface of the historic building.

Prairie Storm

"Prairie Storm"
impressionism
by
Jack Providenti
6" x 8"
oil on canvas

The high desert is one of the few places that you can witness a thunderstorm without getting wet. Here the storm is happening roughly 12 miles away from where you are watching. The clear blue skies above and behind the mountains sheds light on the far distant prairie. I painted this with very small palette knives and flat brush.

" Bernice"...aka The Easter Cow

I put the finishing touches on this today, and since today is Easter, I thought it appropriate to include that with the title! This cow was peeking at me while I was painting outdoors at Box Canyon. I quickly grabbed my camera and took a picture which today became a painting.

"Haunted" by Jack Providenti

"Haunted"
impressionism
by
Jack Providenti
oil on canvas
10 x 20 inches

I named this painting "Haunted"...10 x 20 inches.I'm sometimes certain that the mountain forest is haunted. This piece might reflect that with it's filtered light and dark shadows. There's an "under-painting" of an oil wash which delineates the dominant shapes. The rest of the piece is done with palette knives. This process allows me to fully express the uniqueness of the ancient Ponderosa Pines.

Top Of The Mountain

"Top Of The Mountain"
impressionism
by
Jack Providenti

oil on canvas 16 x 20 inches

Davenport Mountain, New Mexico was a land of erupting volcanoes about 2 million yrs ago. This scene is near the top of the mountain...9ooo ft above sea level where the pines are thinner and the brush is thicker. While it's no longer barren up there you still get a strong sense of quite solitude.

Spirit Of The Woods

"Spirit Of The Woods"
impressionism
by
Jack Providenti

18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas

This is a larger and more vivid version of "Forest Enchantment", a study that I did a short while ago. Here the sunlight creates interesting effects. It pours and filters into the woods, penetrating foliage and reflecting local colors. This was painted with brush & palette knife.

A Forest Winter's Thaw

" A Forest Winter's Thaw"

by
Jack Providenti
8 x 10 inches, oil on board

This scene is deep in the mountain forest. In the summer, downpours of torrential rain carve arroyos into the landscape. This one holds the only snow that hasn't begun to melt during a January thaw. I painted it using palette knife & brush.

A Festival Of Light By Jack Providenti

"A Festival Of Light"
impressionism
by
Jack Providenti

8 x 10 inches
oil on board

I'm working on a project to complete 20 to 25 paintings which will portray the area around Davenport Mountain here in the Cibola National Forest, NM. This one, "A Festival Of Light" is number three. The idea is that a whole series of paintings, done within a period of 4 or 5 weeks will develop a strong intimacy between the environment and myself. You might say that 20 to 25 pieces compose one strong communication. This one is from a photo that I took last summer, but many will be winter scenes, as it is now winter.

Just when I was finishing this painting the electric went out! Up here in the remote mountains of New Mexico that could be a real problem. BUT...they went back on again! Here's the painting I call "Enchanted Evening"...in the New Mexico high plains desert. It is 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas using brush & palette knife.
