I was commissioned to paint this....kind of a different subject matter for me. This used to be actor Paul Newman's private jet, a Saberliner. I painted it for the new owner. My reference pictures had it on the ground, but I put it in the sky.

Historic downtown in St Petersburg comes to life just before & after the sun goes down. What attracted me to this particular scene were the lights and how they reflected in windows and table tops. This was "under painted" to establish values and tones, then expressed with palette knives.

I find sailboats inspiring. This one was painted with brushes & palette knives. The technique lends itself to creating effects of ripples in the water and a few puffy clouds against an otherwise clear blue sky.

The mood of the early morning is what captured & inspired me to paint this. In order to communicate what I observed, as well as my emotional response to it, I applied a technique known as"tonalism" (an artistic style that emerged in the 1880s when landscapes were painted with an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist). Because of my strong affinity for color, I put sort of an "impressionistic" twist on it, rather than portraying it subdued & shadowy the way a true tonalist would.

There are few buildings in the Tampa Bay area that are painted more than then the historic Don Ce Sar in St Petersburg Beach. The hotel is clearly regal...thus the title "His Majesty". While this is a traditional type of a pose, the viewpoint is not commonly painted as it is seen from the bridge that spans the Intercoastel from Tiere Verde to St Pete Beach.

I love painting umbrellas... there's something about their flowing lines that makes them fit in especially well with the waves of water scenes. What I liked most about this subject was the way the colors complimented one another. There's just a hint of purple near the yellow of the umbrella, then greens near the yellow, pinks & reds near the greens, & warm sand with some blues & oranges. beach art

There is always a colorful scene to paint downtown in St Petersburg Florida. The challenge of painting this was in capturing this space.... with docks, boats, buildings & trees, and putting it all on an area of only 5 x 7 inches.

The setting sun shines east and quietly casts a slightly burning glow over the St Petersburg Marina. The soft, subtle colors inspired me to paint this scene where the compliments of orange and blue mix to create a warm, festive mood.

If you've ever witnessed the entire duration of a sun setting, you've seen the effects created by that magnificent descending ball of light. Clouds quickly form, then change colors faster than the eye can keep up with. Of the many frames captured by my camera, I chose this one to paint.

The sun breaks into the sky at the St. Petersburg Marina in Florida. I arrived before sunrise and waited for the morning light to color the sky. When it did I was ready with my camera and took several photos as reference for this painting.

Here is a painting with an unusual story. I was painting on the beach when a professional photographer happened to be there, he took a picture of me painting at sunset, and sent it to me. I liked it so much that I began to use it as my profile photo on Facebook. A very talented and professional artist, Christine Sargent, was inspired by it and commissioned me to do a painting of the photo. I was grateful for the "inspiration"!

The scene is downtown St Petersburg. This can almost be called a "plein-air sketch", as it was done quickly... in about 30 minutes. The light from the setting sun was changing rapidly and I wanted to capture the pre-sunset mood that first impressed me, rather than develop details of the scene.

"A Celebration"..Garage Mural

I just completed this mural here in colorful St Petersburg Florida. It's in a section called the "Old Northeast"...lots of quaint historic homes in a garden setting.

The challenge was to paint on the garage wall that was constructed with boards, so I used the horizontal edges of the boards to contribute to the lattice effect.

Strong shadows, soft greens and blues with calm waters on the Gulf Of Mexico. This is a somewhat re-worked version of a plein air painting which had not been completed until now. Painting on site challenges the painter to not waste brush strokes, as the light changes quickly. After a composition is decided upon, the focus is to define the dark shapes which create the shadows. Back in the studio, I added some depth & interest by adding complimentary colors.

Downtown in colorful St. Petersburg, FL on a day that the heat emptied the streets of it's people. Still, there are a few brunch customers enjoying the colorful ambiance.

I painted this mostly with brushes, and used the palette knife to add perspective to the foreground.
