Early stages of a portrait

I think this is a good start. The dominant shapes in the scene are described, starting with the dark values and medium tones.

This started with a plein -air value sketch which was done in a very loose style. I took it to my studio and developed this painting from it. Not so loose anymore, but a worthy representation of the area with O'maddy's Restuarant & Salty's Bar. Right across the street from the bay.

Simplify A Scene with A Value Sketch

Did a quick plein air ( outdoor) value sketch ( black & white) of scene in downtown Gulfport. When it is done as a very thin layer you can get the values, then add the colors.

Just started this painting of a scene in dowtown Gulfport which is considered part of St Petersburg, but is a seperate municipality. I'm about an hour into it. This is what I teach: that if you build a good foundation the rest of the painting moves along smoothly. This is where I live....colorful artsy town on Boca Ciega Bay.
